The first survey for the presence of entomopathogenic nematodes was undertaken in the KwaZulu-Natal Province in , with the nematodes being used to test their effectiveness against the sugarcane stalk borer Eldana saccharina. Steinernema khoisanae was the first new species to be described from South Africa, and to date, a total of nine Steinernema spp. Eight of these species were found to be native to South Africa. In the case of Heterorhabditis, four species were recorded, of which two are endemic. The associated bacteria of four entomopathogenic nematode species were described, of which three were found to be new to science.

Research on the use of entomopathogenic nematodes as biocontrol agents has been carried out to control the woodwasp pine trees , codling moth apples and pears , false codling moth citrus and deciduous fruit , mealybugs citrus and grapevine , fruit fly and weevils deciduous fruit and the sugarcane stalk borer sugarcane in local production areas.
